With the redevelopment of the Digbeth area for the HS2 rail link, a number of new archaeological discoveries have been made.
This is the starting point for our exhibition, which is an immersive experience, giving visitors the feeling that they are visiting an actual archaeological site!
The exhibition is based on historical fact. It centres on the discovery of two skeletons, dating from the medieval period (something that really happened in this area, some 20 years ago).
There is a mystery about this discovery. How did they die? Why were they buried in unmarked graves? A number of objects have been found nearby. Do they offer us any clues to the mystery? Perhaps the answer lies in the fragments of an ancient fresco, that were unearthed at the bottom of an ancient well?
Children will be invited to examine the evidence – and draw their own conclusions! As they move through the building, they will encounter actors-teachers in role as a team of expert archaeologists; and there will be a range of activities for them to take part in.
The exhibition has been devised by groups of young people from local secondary schools, with support from local historian, Professor Carl Chinn.
The schools tours and workshop activities have been devised and will be led by experienced facilitators from Midland Actors Theatre. This event is ideal for children at KS2 and KS3, and will help teachers to address National Curriculum targets in local history and medieval history.
