The National Trust and Wassifa are partnering to display a 1950’s West Indian Front Room and 1980’s Sound System at the Birmingham Back to Backs, in celebration of Wassifa’s 50th anniversary.
The Back to Backs holds the collection of George Saunders who was a tailor working on the premises from 1974 to 2001. George was from St. Kitt’s in the Caribbean and came to Birmingham in 1954. From 1974, he was able to set up his business in Hurst Street in what was to become the city’s last complete court of Back-to-Back houses. George kindly donated the items from his workshop to the Trust and we are proud to hold such a unique collection and share his story with our visitors.
