It has been announced that the proposed plans to enhance the existing Alexander Stadium in Perry Barr have been approved.

The support of these plans are a welcome development as the renovated stadium will play host to world-class athletics in the Summer of 2022.

Situated in Perry Barr, the updated stadium will continue to be home to the famous Birchfield Harriers Athletics Club. In addition, a new partnership with Birmingham City University will see exercise and sports students make use of the enhanced facilities, increasing the stadium’s purpose and use. Residents of the area and the wider public will also be encouraged to visit and enjoy a variety of leisure, health and well-being activities and initiatives which will take place after the Games. Developing these amenities for the local community is vital in providing a legacy for Birmingham 2022.

The approved proposals will see a permanent increase in seating capacity from 12,700 to 18,000. Extra temporary seating will be constructed for the duration of the Games to boost capacity further, contributing to the nearly 1.5 million tickets that will be available for Commonwealth Games events across the region in a few years.

Our Birmingham 2022 Chief Executive, Ian Reid said “The Alexander Stadium is a pivotal venue for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, as not only will it host the track and field events for athletics but it’s also where we will stage our official opening and closing ceremonies for the Games.

“Today’s news that planning approval has been granted is, therefore, a key moment for us as the organisers of the Games and one which we are pleased to be able to celebrate with our partners.

“Birmingham City Council will be delivering the new sections of the stadium, and we look forward to watching progress over the next couple of years, ahead of us moving into the stadium when we deliver the Games in 2022.”

This news marks a big leap forward in making Birmingham 2022 a spectacular Games for athletes, spectators and natives of the West Midlands.
