▲ Birmingham’s Centenary Square is playing host to our 1 Year to Go Celebrations
People from across Birmingham and beyond are invited to a huge sports festival we’re hosting today at Centenary Square, to celebrate exactly one year to go until Birmingham 2022 begins.
For one day only, the square is filled with sports activities hosted by the national governing bodies of 12 Commonwealth Sports running fun sports zones from 10am until 6pm, providing a free family day out at the start of the summer holidays.
▲ Lawn bowls is one of the sports on offer at today’s event
A boxing ring is hosting a pad challenge, there will be a longest rally challenge on a special squash court and a shooting challenge will be held on a basketball court. There’s also a sprint challenge on a short track, so that aspiring athletes can test their speed. Tag wrestling and judo sessions are running throughout the day and table tennis tables will sports festival participants to take part in short games.
Cricket is being showcased through a batting simulator, with expert coaches on hand to give batting tips and a mini bowling green is being created so that everyone can try their hand at lawn bowls. A volleyball speed cage is also set up to test the speed of your ‘spike’.
There’s also the chance to meet Team England athletes and watch them demonstrate each sport. They’re taking part in question and answer sessions, providing a real insight into how they are preparing for the Commonwealth Games.
We hope everyone will come and take part, and take advantage of the opportunity to have a go at sports you may not have seen before. Information will be provided about sports clubs and organisations in the Birmingham area that offer the sports being showcased in the square.
There is a Birmingham 2022 merchandise kiosk at the event, with a selection of items from the Birmingham 2022 and Perry the mascot range available, including men’s, women’s and children’s apparel, headwear and accessories.

Perry, the official mascot for Birmingham 2022, will be here all day, making special appearances in Centenary Square.
You’re also encouraged to bring a reusable bottle, as a water bar is being hosted by Severn Trent, official nature and carbon neutral supporter for Birmingham 2022. This means you can refill bottles with tap water – staying hydrated during the event and reducing the number of single use plastic bottles.
If you’re joining us today, we encourage you to take a lateral flow test before arriving at Centenary Square. Hand sanitising stations will be available throughout the site, and a queueing system will also be in operation at the sports activities that are in high demand, to give everyone plenty of space when taking part. Test and trace barcodes will be displayed in the square too, so that visitors can check in, and face coverings will be encouraged at busy times.
